the OOP is white of course
i do think this is the logical extreme of robin diangelo white fragility-type thinking where anti-racism is a spiritual process of self-improvement
for white peoplerather than, like, working towards tangible goalsIt also seems off that burning every bridge to your family is seen as more effective than like… maintaining relationships and having less combative communication. If you can’t be anti-racist and maintain at least a few civil relationships with people who have different views, how are you going to effectively do anything?
ah, but the point is not to effectively do anything! the point is to portray yourself as a kind of lone wolf facing insurmountable odds, so when you don’t accomplish anything it’s just proof positive that the system is too stacked against you and anyways your hands are perfectly clean. actually trying to get things done means that you might fail – or that you might succeed, and have to deal with that.
needless to say i do not have a lot of respect for this type of activist, who would probably not describe themselves as more interested in theatrics than results but like: the rest of us can see.
The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift in Tamfourhill, Falkirk, in central Scotland, connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. It reconnects the two canals for the first time since the 1930s. It opened in 2002 as part of the Millennium Link project.
The wheel raises boats by 24 metres (79 ft), but the Union Canal is still 11 metres (36 ft) higher than the aqueduct which meets the wheel. Boats must also pass through a pair of locks between the top of the wheel and the Union Canal. The Falkirk Wheel is the only rotating boat lift of its kind in the world, and one of two working boat lifts in the United Kingdom, the other being the Anderton Boat Lift.

I never want to hear conservatives go on about repressive censorship in China, North Korea, and Iran ever again
To be clear to those unfamiliar: these are the companies that libraries use to lend ebooks.
They are literally cutting off library access to minors.
If you are affected by this or other bans and restrictions in the United States, be aware that the Brooklyn Public Library is offering free digital library cards to anyone age 13-21 nationwide as part of their Books UnBanned initiative:
BOOOOOST
Seattle has joined them:
the article is from 2023 but this is apparently still a thing. in addition to brooklyn and seattle, digital library cards are also being offered by the boston public library (ages 13-26), the los angeles county public library (ages 13-18), and the san diego public library (ages 12-26). for the la card you need to live in california, but for boston and san diego you can be anywhere in the us.

One thing I love about Existing While Fat is saying things people do NOT want you to say and watching them squirm about it.
For example, talking about the last time you had stomach flu: “I lost, like, 20lbs! It was the worst!”
Or “Actually, I’m going to eat [higher calorie food] instead of [other, lower calorie food], today. I’ve been so busy and distracted, I’ve lost some weight recently, and I don’t want to buy smaller pants.”
“I gained like [x] pounds since my last doctor’s appointment! Yay!”
All of MY examples are about how much I talk about how I don’t want to bother with buying smaller pants AND how happy I am to regain weight I lose because of mental/physical illness, but I’m sure other fat folks have good examples.
People HATE when you are sad about weight loss and excited about weight gain. I love how much they hate it. Die mad. <3

[id: graffiti on the base of a concrete overpass where previous grafiti has been covered over with gray paint multiple times. In black all-caps handwriting, it reads: “What kind of paint are you using to paint over this? Because if it is latex, its probably way too cold for it, you want good adhesion, you need like at least 40°-45°. Maybe wait till it warms up a little, I mean what’s the big rush? Like, I’m in a rush now but our situations are different” /end id]
